Before considering a Large Munsterlander, it's really important that you do your research and meet as many of them as possible. The breed absolutely isn't for the faint hearted, and they can be challenging at times.
Most Large Munsterlander breeders will want to meet you first, and ask you questions to assess your suitability for owning the breed. They might ask you about:

The Club's best advice is to spend time talking to people who have experience of owning a Large Munsterlander.
A dog which has beauty, intelligence and an in-built desire to be running in country fields, charging down muddy banks, jumping into flowing rivers and searching through thick wooded areas. A dog that is always willing to be out and about in the best and worst of our British weather, returning to your home usually wet, often muddy and still wanting to be as close to you (physically) as they possibly can! |
Large Munsterlanders, unlike many other well-known gundog breeds, are fortunate in that a 'working dog' is no different in looks or conformation to 'show' dogs. In fact for several years now, the top winning Large Munsterlanders have been genuine dual purpose working/show dogs. This is a dog that needs to be out and about - regardless of weather - every day - winter as well as summer! A Large Munsterlander needs plenty of exercise, basic training, stability and love - without these essential requirements you could be heading for problems and trouble! Large Munsterlanders are capable of excelling in many spheres, however, it should always be remembered that this is a hunt, point, retrieve gundog bred from excellent working bloodlines. |
