LARGE MUNSTERLANDER CLUB WORKING TESTS

The Large Munsterlander Club hold an annual working test at Hall Barn, Beaconsfield, usually held on the first weekend in July.

Gundog Working Tests are events held out of the shooting season. The various tests are designed to test the dogs abilities in all areas of gundog work, relevant to the HPR in a non-shooting situation.

There are normally a minimum of three classes: puppy, novice and open but some societies also run special classes for example Special Beginners or Graduate.

Puppy - Dogs up to 18 months on the day of the test

Novice - Dogs not having won an Award or CoM at a Field Trial, or 1st, 2nd, 3rd in an Open Working test, or 1st in a Novice Working Test, held under K.C. regulations

Open - Open to all HPRs

Tests involve hunting, possibly with caged game for pointing, retrieving and water (if available).  Puppy tests are generally very simple and test the basics, obedience, heelwork, steadiness and simple retrieving.  Novice tests are more difficult to test the mature HPR's abilities with more complicated retrieves over longer distances, blind and seen retrieves often with the sound of a shot, multiple retrieves in the same test, maybe over obstacles, through gaps in hedges, round corners.  Open tests are over much longer distances and cold game and shot is often used.

GWTs are a good social working event with a good opportunity to see HPRs working, all dogs are welcome and un-entered dogs may be present so it is a good occasion to socialise puppies and for new owners to come and see what gundog work is all about.

If you have a youngster who knows basic obedience and will retrieve canvas dummies, why not enter a puppy working test?  Don’t be afraid, all the handlers and judges were beginners once, and will be more than willing to offer help and encouragement, just go along and enjoy a fantastic day out with your Munsterlander.
