The Large Munsterlander is a gundog, originating from Germany. It belongs to the Hunt, Point and Retrieve Group, along with most other gundogs originating from the continent. These are often described as an 'all round gundog', making them an ideal 'rough shooting' dog. Ideal for working in woodland, banking, rough cover and root fields, they will work steadily and thoroughly.
The Large Munsterlanders love of water makes it an ideal duck or wildfowling gundog. They have excellent natural ability for tracking and retrieving wounded game, giving them great popularity as a 'deer dog'. To obtain a working certificate for 'Deer Work' in its homeland, it must follow a four hour old blood trail and find its quarry. Generally most of the tests in Germany are now run on trails over 20 hours old.
Because of their good game finding and strong natural pointing ability they are also popular with falconers.

OF THE BREED
Richard Smith

We are committed to promoting the breed as first and foremost a useful working Gundog and would like to see more LMs competing in Field Trials and Working Tests, attending our training
days and Natural Aptitude Tests and not forgetting out and about in the grass roots of the shooting field. That is not to say we don’t have some excellent competitors amongst our membership with dogs that are truly ambassadors for our breed.
If you are interested in a Large Munsterlander as a shooting companion, and are not sure whether our breed would suit your needs; if you have a Large Munsterlander and are interested in training your dog to the gun, competing in the various tests and trials or if you are just intrigued by your dog’s natural ability to hunt, point and retrieve but don’t know how to proceed, please feel free to contact the Field Trial Secretary, ftsec@largemunsterlanderclub.co.uk
